LOCAL

Together with local residents

Community environmental conservation activities:

we conduct environmental conservation activities to prevent accidents and create a bear-free environment. We mow the grass and pick up litter in areas near mountains, rivers, parks, vacant lots, and places with poor visibility. This is an activity that involves many local residents, businesses, NPOs, and schools, and by working together, it leads to popularization.

01 Action Local grass-cutting activity

Bears are timid

Why is grass-cutting necessary?

To improve visibility and prevent bears from hiding or creating paths in the town, and to make it easier to spot bears. Bears prefer to move around quietly and hide themselves. By cutting the grass, let’s create an environment where they are visible. Even if there are bears, they can be quickly spotted if the visibility is good, which also helps prevent accidents from unexpected encounters.

02 Action Local picking up litter activity

Bear loves food

Do you think that only food waste is considered garbage?

No! It’s not just food waste! Everything that has even a slight smell or taste of food is considered litter, such as an empty juice can or a finished lunch tray. Now, imagine what bears normally eat in their daily lives. They eat wild plants, nuts, and insects, which have very mild flavors. To bears, the seasonings humans use are very attractive. Once they get a taste, they will come looking for more. And once they associate the litter with people providing food, they will start demanding food from humans. Littering is like feeding them. Be sure to avoid littering at all times.

Education

Education Program

Environmental education activity:

We learn about the ecology of brown bears and think together about how to coexist with nature and wild animals. By understanding, we think about what we can do ourselves, what kind of preventive measures we can take, and we take it as our own responsibility. Then, we consider and convey the importance of thinking about others.

03 Action The brown bear’s class

Looking at the world from the brown bear’s perspective

Do you know the correct information about brown bears?

If you live in Hokkaido or have traveled there, you may have heard some scary stories about brown bears. Correct knowledge is important to protect ourselves and the bears. First, we will learn about the ecology of brown bears. Based on this, we will think from the perspective of the brown bear and consider what actions they take and what we should do in response. We will take this as a personal matter and think deeply about human and bear lives, as well as what a sustainable environment means for everyone.

Social Design

Collaborating among the community, NPOs, and companies

Social Design Activity:

We will create a system that allows people to participate in activities from various perspectives, including the daily lives of local citizens.

Let’s BearSmart

Bear Smart Project

We will establish BearSmart standards as a bear country and incorporate common values for the coexistence of humans and bears in the ecological system. Collaborating with local citizens, NPOs, government, and corporations, we aim to create a platform that allows stakeholders from other industries outside the region to participate in activities they can do from their respective positions. Our goal is to aim for coexistence.
